    Kate Green Band
    Friday 23rd February 2024 - 8.00pm
Doors open at 7.30pm - evening finishes at 10.30pm
    THE KATE GREEN BAND
The Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford GU1 4LH

The Kate Green Band were one of our “hits” of 2022 with several of our regular audience-members describing their performance as their favourite evening ever at the club.

The band does not have a high profile, but from time to time they emerge from the mists with a potent cocktail of trad, blues, jazz, old timey and contemporary to tickle the palate for an hour or two and then they disappear as mysteriously as they came. We were extremely lucky to have got them to come down from the far North last just over a year ago and we’re delighted to have them back again.

Kate Green runs the show — a singer of acknowledged stature who has won prizes and awards and attracted the admiration of people who know their folk music — Dave Burland, Roy Bailey, Sheila Stewart, Robin Williamson, Mike Harding. She’s abetted by the scorching fiddle, silky guitar and delicious harmonies of Patrick Walker, and by Raymond Greenoaken on an assortment of instruments including mandola, banjo and Indian harmonium.

Admission £13.00 (member £12.00) - Tickets must be purchased in advance

    EMILY PORTMAN & ROB HARBRON
    Friday 22nd March 2024 - 8.00pm
Doors open at 7.30pm - evening finishes at 10.30pm
    EMILY PORTMAN & ROB HARBRON
The Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford GU1 4LH

Emily has appeared at the club several times before both solo and as a member of Devil’s Interval, and we booked Rob several times under the Electric Voices banner as a member of Leveret and Jon Boden's Remnant Kings. They have now come together to form an inspired new duo delving into English folk traditions.

Emily (voice, banjo & piano) is best known as an original songwriter and for her work with acclaimed folk band The Furrow Collective. Rob (concertina, guitar, voice) tours with Fay Hield, Jon Boden and many more, being in great demand as one the finest multi-instrumentalists in the UK.

Together they take a fresh approach to exploring the traditional music they are both steeped in, drawing out the contemporary relevance in their repertoire with master craftsmanship. Emily’s spellbinding storytelling and unaffected voice combines with Rob’s sympathetic musicality to create an unforgettable and intimate live experience, brimming with a focused subtlety, depth and a shared love of the music.

    Askew Sisters
    Friday 26th April 2024 - 8.00pm
Doors open at 7.30pm - evening finishes at 10.30pm
    HAZEL & EMILY ASKEW
The Guildford Institute, Ward Street, Guildford GU1 4LH

Emily and Hazel Askew were regular guests at the Music Institute until the pandemic and their separate musical careers broke the cycle. We are therefore delighted to welcome them back at the club after far too long a break.

The sisters are widely recognised as two of the foremost performers and interpreters of traditional music from England. Their live performances brim with the depth and connection not only of two sisters, but also of two musicians who have been immersed in folk music all their lives. Together, they rework and reinterpret songs and balladry, creating breath-taking arrangements, which allow words that are hundreds of years old to resonate profoundly with contemporary audiences.

Alongside this, both women are also skilled multi-instrumentalists and expert players of dance music, using fiddles, melodeons, concertina and cello in their innate drive to bring old dance music to life.
